NATIVE DESIGNERS | SHAYNE WATSON
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Shayne Watson, Navajo from Chinle, AZ, fell in love with designing and sewing when he was asked to create a Halloween costume for his sister years ago. “I was asked to make and sew a Halloween costume, and after I completed it, I realized I had a passion for fashion designing.” Now twenty-six years old, Shayne’s clothing line, Shayne Watson Designs, is off to a hot start, with custom orders filling up his time. With customers in Mexico and Canada, Shayne’s outfits and custom coats have won numerous awards all over the southwest. Created with traditional styles and techniques but with a contemporary and modern twist, Shayne is still inspired by the teachings of his grandmother, who is a Navajo seamstress and still designs clothing the same way she taught him. Another signature look of Shayne’s line: Shayne loves to incorporate colors that ‘pop’ and complement each other. While other Native designers lean more towards what’s trending today, Shayne still designs traditional styles with his cultural heritage tied in.
